On the afternoon of October 8, 2014, Overseas Education School and Literature School of Jimei University jointly held Chinese “1+1” student aid volunteer activity. Present at the scene were Yang Yiqing, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Literature School, Lu Qile, Deputy Secretary of the General Party Branch of Overseas Education School, teachers of Chinese Teaching and Research Office of Overseas Education School, representatives of Thailand SD International Education Corporation and Xiamen Yiming Education Consulting Company, student volunteers of Literature School and 61 long-term Chinese scholars of the University. The activity was held in Classroom 101 of Wenjin Building and hosted by Lu Qile.

Lu Qile introduced the specific plan of this activity, extended thankfulness to the leadership of Literature School for their strong supports for this activity and the enthusiastic participation of the student volunteers. Additionally, Lu Qile put forward three expectations for the students of the two schools: First, being orderly, implementing activity plan seriously, and paying attention to the effect of student aid; second, persevering to ensure a good start and a satisfactory end of our activities; third, having the courage to explore, and constantly summarize practical experience, improving the student aid mechanism. He put forward his hopes that student volunteers in the activities could achieve self-improvement, that the language learning students through student activities could improve the passing rate of Chinese proficiency test (HSK), achieving the desire of coming to China to study. Ye Yingguang, the Director of Chinese Teaching and Research Office of Overseas Education School told the details of volunteer training and examination, and raised specific requirements of carrying out student aid activities.

Yang Yiqing affirmed the significance of this activity. She said, this was a win-win and mutually beneficial practice based on previous two years of experience. The “1+1” student aid program not only created atmosphere for overseas students to learn Chinese, broadened their study passage, but also provided practice opportunity of teaching Chinese as a foreign language for students of Literature School, and helped them improve teaching ability. Student aid volunteers were expected to cherish opportunities, follow regulations, do things consistently, and build a good youth image while growing in the course of lending hands.

Finally, a group discussion was held between the student aid volunteers of Literature School and learners of Chinese as a foreign language in Overseas Education School.

Business office of  Lei Jun-CA Construction Limited., a wholly-owned subsidiary incorporated by China Hyway Group Limited in Angola, supported Chinese Embassy in Angola to select and offered funds to the first batch of 30 students to study in “Jimei University - China Hyway International Class”. For this, they will learn Chinese for a year in Jimei University. After obtaining the certificate of Chinese language proficiency test (HSK) level 4, they can apply for the undergraduate major of the University.

In order to improve the mechanism of volunteer activities and better the effectiveness, leaders of both sides negotiated and revised the programs for many times. They selected backbone members from youth volunteer associations to be responsible for organization and implementation of the activities. The Literature School chose more than 60 outstanding students to participate in volunteer service through the method of enrollment, selection and assessment. 6 teachers with rich teaching experience in Chinese as a foreign language were arranged by Overseas Education School as tutors, being responsible for the training and assessment of volunteers and teaching guidance. It was stipulated that there should be 6 hours of voluntary activity time per week, and the activity process should be recorded with feedback provided, forming a feasible long-term mechanism.
