Since the beginning of this year, several vicious cases involving Chinese citizens have happened in South Africa, resulting in five Chinese casualties. Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of South Africa has lodged solemn representations to relevant South African government departments on the above-mentioned cases, requiring the South African side to detect such cases as soon as possible, severely punish the murderers according to law, and take active and effective measures to effectively protect the lives and property safety of Chinese citizens in South Africa

At present, the public security of South Africa is severe and Chinese citizens in South Africa encounter the rising safety risk. Based on the characteristics of such cases, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of South Africa releases the following reminds to all consuls:

I. In the event of an emergency, especially a gun robbery, you should be as calm as possible and do not rashly resist or have a speech or physical conflict with the gangsters. It is imperative to protect your own personal safety and quickly report it to the police after the gangsters rob the property.

II. Weekend is the high incidence period of cases, so it is recommended that Chinese citizens who operate supermarkets, grocery stores, bars and other shops in South Africa, especially in remote cities and towns, shorten the open time or close the store on weekends as appropriate, especially in the evening

III. The northwestern province is the main mining area in South Africa and its local public security recently is particularly severe. It is recommended that Chinese citizens who live and operate stores in this area consider the temporary shut-down and evacuation, and then re-open stores after the situation eases.

IV. If local people are employed, it is recommended to employ them via reliable channels, copy and retain their ID documents and file with the local police for recordation.

    V. It is recommended to take the security measures, install the security doors and windows, electronic monitors and other facilities as much as possible, and regularly check related facilities to ensure them in good conditions. Several large watchdogs can be raised according to the local conditions.

VI. It is recommended to reduce cash transactions and use bank card, bank transfer and other non-cash methods for transactions. Do not carry or store a large amount of cash in your home. Small-scale shops that use cash to trade must deposit cash in the bank in a timely manner. If the amount of cash is large, it is recommended to hire a professional security company to provide escort services.

VII. In order to minimize the personal injury and property damage caused by accidents, it is recommended to purchase the personal and property insurance according to the actual situation.

VIII. It is recommended to get along well with the local people, be kind to local employees, avoid any contradictions and conflicts, and not dispute with others because of small things, causing troubles.

IX. At present, Chinese CPF has opened its public WeChat account (WeChat account: Chinesecpf) and part of Chinese citizens and organizations have established WeChat groups to advice Chinese citizens, societies and organizations in South Africa to build and strengthen the connection, so as to acquire the safety information in a timely manner.

Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of South Africa cares the live and property safety of each Chinese citizen in South Africa. We hope you pay close attention to the local social public security situation, truly increase the precaution consciousness, and take active and effective measures to strengthen the security protection.
